A post for my Dad

Hi anyone and everyone,

Okay, so. For those of you who are following this blog on a regular basis, hello and thanks for sticking with me!

At the beginning of January I alluded to a family crisis keeping me off the drawing board for a while. Specifically, on Boxing Day my Dad, Phil, was diagnosed with a brain tumour, a particularly aggressive one. We were told from the beginning that it was incurable, and although Dad was scheduled for chemo and radiotherapy beginning this week, he never made it that far, and passed away on the 31st January at the age of 57, which is just too young to go. (Actually I think anything under triple figures is too young. I'm aiming for 127 personally.)

Our dad was a brilliant, generous, hugely intelligent man, a warm soul who scarcely had a bad word to say about anybody (though he often expressed ire for journalists who couldn't spell) and we're all shattered by his passing. However, I am not here to mourn, but to bilk the Internet community for money!

One of the last things Dad did was to sign up for the Dryathlon. The Dryathlon was a charity event in which participants agreed to give up the booze for a month in order to raise money for Cancer Research. Dad did not know, when he signed up for the Dryathlon, that he was ill, but he stuck to his pledge from Boxing Day until his death and more than fulfilled it, under circumstances that would have most people reaching for the bottle.

He never did get to publicise his Dryathlon page or ask for donations, but my brother Stephen had the genius idea to open it out to our friends in tribute. So if you're reading this, please spare some good vibes for our Dad, and consider donating to Cancer Research if you can.

Thank you for reading!  x x x
